PIPPA

I’m shaking.

Is it because it’s chilly out here?

Or is it fear?

I’m not sure what it is that’s prevented me from knocking on the door of the other cabin. But I’m lingering in the woods, the cabin with the light on still in sight, my mind unclear on what to do next. All I know is I don’t want another argument with my husband, so I won’t go back to the cabin with him in it just yet.

I’ve relaxed a little now I know Campbell is going to be fine, the drugs I’ve seen work hundreds of times before are surely guaranteed to work again. If they weren’t, I wouldn’t be out here – I’d be by his bedside – but I’m confident he’ll be okay. But, just to be sure, Mom is currently watching over him, while Dad is nearby in the cabin, and with those two medical minds on hand, the patient is well looked after. It’s nice to ease that pressure of worry, even if it came at the expense of the police knowing I was at that hospital, and Karl hating me even more for dragging us out here. I can’t relax when it comes to this stranger who was with Campbell when he got hurt, though. I want to talk to him, find out more about him, ensure he really isn’t a threat and is just some divorcee living a quiet life in the woods like he said he was. I can’t know for sure, but what I do know with absolute certainty is that he carried Campbell to safety and that counts for something.

We got interrupted the first time we spoke.

Now it’s time to finish our conversation.

I stop hesitating and march up to the cabin, fully prepared to knock, although just before I do I hear something behind me.

‘Pippa! Where are you?’

It’s Karl. He’s calling out to find me, though he hasn’t spotted me over here. It won’t take him long to do so if he looks in this direction, and that’s when I realise that I really don’t want him to see me yet. Our argument is still too raw, and I can’t face having to hear him shout at me again, nor can I be bothered to talk to him if I don’t have anything nice to say at present.

That’s why I dart down the side of the cabin so I’ll be out of view. I can still hear him calling out for me, but my back is pressed against the timber structure that separates us and I know he can’t see me here.

But someone else can.

‘Hello, neighbour.’

I almost jump out of my skin at the sound of the voice just above my head, and as I step away from the cabin and look up, I see Hector leaning out of a window. He’s totally caught me lurking around his place. Although I quickly remind myself that this is technically not his place at all, and he doesn’t really belong here anymore than I do.
